A tree planted by somebody with no reason to care whether it lives rarely survives its first dry season. Community nurseries change who has that reason.
Working with youth groups in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district, the directorate has supported the establishment of nurseries raising indigenous and economically useful species for sale to projects, assemblies and farmers.
The groups keep the income. They also keep the survival records, which is how the directorate now knows which species are worth raising here and which are not.
